All baptized Christians are welcome at the Table of Jesus Christ in a United Methodist Church. Anyone not baptized, but who has experienced the transforming grace of God while celebrating with us, is invited to commune. Such persons should contact the pastor for instruction on baptism and union with the community of faith. United Methodist Christians believe Holy Communion is a means of grace; that is to say, Holy Communion a gift from God that conveys or channels God’s grace to us in three realities—past, present and future. By sharing in the bread and cup, we return to the past and remember how Jesus fed his disciples a new covenant meal; then, in the present, the love and grace of God are conveyed to us when we eat the bread and taste of the cup, making us one with the Risen Christ in the here and now; in the experience of Holy Communion, we are given a vision of the future feast when we will share with Jesus in heaven. We ordinarily commune by the ancient method of intinction, wherein those receiving communion move to a station where they are handed a wafer to dip into the chalice and then commune.
