Wesley Church offers a nontraditional youth ministry that emphasizes the journey of discipleship through missions and mentors. While youth in Sixth through Twelfth Grade have the opportunity to attend their own regular weekly education classes, mission opportunities, service projects, and small groups as well as mission-focused events and trips, they are encouraged to become a part of the overall life of the church by taking part in church-wide education and mission opportunities. Youth who are active at Wesley Church and want to join may attend a class held from Ash Wednesday until Pentecost called Young Inquirers. This mentor-based class alternates between one-on-one mentor sessions and group-teaching sessions with the pastor and staff.
Middle school students meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. Currently we are using material from Bible Quest: BQ Be Quiet with God. God’s Voice through the Voices of Other Youth. High school students meet together in the Youth Lounge on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. They discuss timely concerns from books they are reading, or events happening in their lives. Connect with Sue.
Ninth graders and older can explore the meaning of faith during Young Inquirers sessions. They are scheduled during the Season of Lent. The students learn about taking the vows of church membership as a fulfillment of the promises that their parents made at their baptism. If a student has not been baptized, he or she learns about taking those vows for themselves prior to the ritual of church membership. Young Inquirers who choose to, become church members on Pentecost . Connect with Joe.
Youth are encouraged to be part of service projects and events that involve the total church membership. Youth centered projects are planned together by our Urban Missioner and youth. Connect with Joe.
We gather in Fellowship Hall on Saturday for a time of learning about global hunger, poverty in the U.S. and around the world. A shopping trip to a grocery store when you are hungry is eye opening. Games, movies and activities all are used to teach about hunger. The fast is broken on Sunday morning at Holy Communion. And then enjoying a Pancake Breakfast cooked and served by United Methodist Men. Connect with Joe.
A weekend away at a United Methodist Camping facility means time to explore faith in God, learn more about what being a disciple to Jesus means, and allowing the Holy Spirit to deepen relationships with other youth and adult leaders.
How can we encounter the world right here on our own doorsteps? One way is by helping to fight hunger and poverty in the socially and ethnically diverse areas of our city. Every year Wesley Church walks to raise money and awareness for poverty here in Bethlehem and around the world by joining the CROP Hunger Walk—that's the Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty Hunger Walk. Ten to fifteen percent of the money we raise goes to local ministries like New Bethany Ministries and Victory House. Please stop by the CROP Walk table in the atrium to join us in our efforts to raise money and awareness to overcome poverty both here and around the world. The CROP Walk will begin on Sunday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. underneath the hill-to-hill bridge in downtown Bethlehem. Please join us! See Joe Harvey (joe@wesleychurch.com) at the CROP Walk Table in the atrium on Sunday mornings for more information or call 610-865-5715.
